Creative Leadership
Musings from The Potting Shed
Whenever I tell people I coach for creative leadership, the first question I’m asked is usually: “Creative leadership? What’s that?”
For me, creative leadership is leadership that nourishes creativity. In yourself as a leader, and in your team or organisation. It’s a way of leading that makes space for imagination, experimentation, curiosity, and new ways of thinking.
Intentional creative leadership helps organisations think more creatively, solve problems more effectively, act with flexibility, and respond to challenge with confidence. It builds sustainability in a changing world. It also supports the mental health and wellbeing of leaders and teams, and (importantly) it brings more joy and energy into the workplace. More satisfaction. Less burnout. Better retention.
Some sectors naturally lean into creativity. Think art galleries, theatres, design studios. Others are shaped by process, regulation, or governance. In those environments, creativity can feel like it’s in tension with the systems that keep everything running. I’ve lived that tension myself.
But here’s the thing: creative leadership isn’t only for “creative” industries.
It will look different in different contexts, but the principles are universal. Every leader can build creativity into their metaphorical muscle‑memory, and into the muscle‑memory of their team.
Because creativity isn’t a luxury. It’s an act of courage, curiosity, and hope. And it’s always transformational.
If this sparks something for you, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
